Почему не работает 301 редирект через htaccess?

Добрый день!
Не могу настроить 301 редирект директории и всех ее потомков на главную страницу

Пишу такие правила:
RewriteRule ^resepshnyi(.*)$ http://varmedia.ru/ [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^massaj(.*)$ http://varmedia.ru/ [R=301,L]


При этом:
https://varmedia.ru/category/massaj/vibromassazhery -> 301
https://varmedia.ru/category/massaj/ -> 404
https://varmedia.ru/category/massaj -> 301
https://varmedia.ru/category/fitnes-mebel/resepshnyi/z2 -> 404
https://varmedia.ru/category/fitnes-mebel/resepshnyi/ -> 404
https://varmedia.ru/category/fitnes-mebel/resepshnyi -> 301

правила очень похожи но работают по разному, помогите пожалуйста разобраться.

RewriteRule ^massaj(.*)$ http://varmedia.ru/ [R=301,L]

Тут в шаблоне ^ означает начало строки, так что с ^massaj могут совпасть только строки начинающиеся на massaj, а вы проверяете адреса начинающиеся на category/massaj/ и редирект не происходит.
Срабатывает RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA] и запрос отправляется в index.php.
Дальше работает уже движок сайта.

Для https://varmedia.ru/category/massaj
RewriteRule ^category/massaj  https://varmedia.ru/ [R=301,L]
