Как в django сделать у модели user поле email уникальным?

Доброго времени суток.

Добавил в __init__.py в папке models.py вот такой фрагмент:
User._meta.get_field('email')._unique = True

Как видно из кода, пытаюсь сделать поле email уникальным у User модели.
Говорим, makemigrations:

Говорим, migrate:

Модель из django:
class AbstractUser(AbstractBaseUser, PermissionsMixin):
    """
    An abstract base class implementing a fully featured User model with
    admin-compliant permissions.

    Username and password are required. Other fields are optional.
    """
    username_validator = UnicodeUsernameValidator() if six.PY3 else ASCIIUsernameValidator()

    username = models.CharField(
        _('username'),
        max_length=150,
        unique=True,
        help_text=_('Required. 150 characters or fewer. Letters, digits and @/./+/-/_ only.'),
        validators=[username_validator],
        error_messages={
            'unique': _("A user with that username already exists."),
        },
    )

По умолчанию уникально же. Проверкой повторов вроде сама джанга занимается.
Типа решение такое
@receiver(pre_save, sender=User)
def User_pre_save(sender, **kwargs):
    email = kwargs['instance'].email
    username = kwargs['instance'].username

    if not email: raise ValidationError("email required")
    if sender.objects.filter(email=email).exclude(username=username).count(): raise ValidationError("email needs to be unique")
