Никак. Возьмите у startssl.com бесплатный сертифика и сделайте обычный redirect.

Покажите конфиг nginx.

Включите error_log там написали бы что к чему.
а вообще проблема в proxy_buffering

ну и логи нужно отключать не направлением в /dev/null, а

access_log off;
error_log /dev/null crit;

Еще можно посмотреть куда пишет nginx (lsof в помощь)
